Mungbean Mungbean have shaken their past reputation as the "mongrel bean" and are more commonly now known as the "money bean"! This is due to two main factors. Firstly the development of new varieties with superior agronomic properties (particularly in ease of harvest) have meant fewer failed crops and bad growing experiences. Secondly, strong international demand over the past few seasons has meant high prices and the advent of fixed price area contracts have taken much of the risk away from growers. The Central Queensland climate is ideally suited to mungbean production and our longer warm-season and the short 90 day growing period of mungbeans means that CQ growers can harvest both a spring and summer crop or double crop easily back into wheat.
Millet Millet is also a quick crop and with a stable year-round market is can be beneficial for cash-flow. Regal Seeds has exclusive access to several AWA and Kibi varieties which are exported into the lucrative Japanese human consumption market.
Chickpea Chickpea has an excellent fit into CQ farming systems. Desi types (Jimbour, Kyabra, Moti) are a low risk option and perform well in dry years when chickpea's tap-rooted growth habit allows it to forage for deep moisture.
The higher-value kabuli types (Macarena, Big Balls) are typically grown under irrigation and require more specialised management and marketing. Cowpea Two main varieties of cowpea are produced in Central Queensland. Red Caloona is a lucrative crop grown as planting seed for the coastal beef and dairy industries, where it is planted as a high protein forage crop. Black-eye (sometimes called Banjo) cowpea is produced for human consumption both domestically and in South-East Asia. Cowpea are relatively easy to grow under irrigation and as a legume do not require nitrogen fertilisation.
Lab Lab There is a lucrative seed market for limited quantities of Lab Lab. It is one of the highest nitrogen producers of all grain legumes and so is an excellent break crop for paddocks which are in need of renovation or rotation.
